She throws herself into her work from dusk to dawn, until her solitary routine is disrupted by the appearance of a mysterious child who shows up at her cabin barefoot and covered in bruises.

The girl calls herself Ursa, and she claims to have been sent from the stars to witness five miracles. With concerns about the child’s home situation, Jo reluctantly agrees to let her stay—just until she learns more about Ursa’s past.
Jo enlists the help of her reclusive neighbor, Gabriel Nash, to solve the mystery of the charming child. But the more time they spend together, the more questions they have. How does a young girl not only read but understand Shakespeare? Why do good things keep happening in her presence? And why aren’t Jo and Gabe checking the missing children’s website anymore?

I absolutely LOVED everything about this book - the writing, the characters and the story line. The perfect trifecta! I love that there was still a bit of an unanswered question at the end. If all of her writing is this gorgeous then I have no idea how I haven't heard of this author sooner. I will definitely be reading more by her.
Elle Is For Livinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10678832226814328887noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3600559449923896597.post-66099966828664398012024-03-05T19:16:00.000-07:002024-03-05T19:16:43.180-07:00The Postcard by Anne Berest

My Rathing: 2.0

2003. Together with the usual holiday cards, an anonymous postcard is delivered to the Berest family home. On the front, a photo of the Opéra Garnier in Paris. On the back, the names of Anne Berest’s maternal great-grandparents, Ephraïm and Emma, and their children, Noémie and Jacques—all killed at Auschwitz.
Fifteen years after the postcard is delivered, Anne, is decides to discover who sent it and why. Aided by her chain-smoking mother, family members, friends, associates, a private detective, a graphologist, and many others, she embarks on a journey to discover the fate of the Rabinovitch family: their flight from Russia following the revolution, their journey to Latvia, Palestine, and Paris. What emerges is a moving saga that shatters long-held certainties about Anne’s family, her country, and herself.

The story of Auschwitz is horrific and needs to never be forgotten. That being said, this book is not the one to read and I am shocked it won an award. Yes, I know I am in the minority but this was a struggle to finish and I should have left it in my DNF pile. The first half of the book was interesting but the last half was very long and boring. I didn't care about any of the characters and the idea of the postcard felt contrived and drawn out till it couldn't be stretched anymore. There was a family saga worth telling in here but for me, it was lost amongst the bad writing and flimsy storyline.
Elle Is For Livinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10678832226814328887noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3600559449923896597.post-84122217986493066442024-03-04T22:35:00.000-07:002024-03-04T22:35:47.709-07:00Fearless by Eric Blehm

My Rating: 4.9

Fearless takes you deep into SEAL Team Six, straight to the heart of one of it's most legendary operators. When Navy SEAL Adam Brown woke up on March 17, 2010, he didn't know he would die that night in the Hindu Kush Mountains of Afghanistan--but he was ready. In a letter to his children, not meant to be seen unless the worst happened, "I'm not afraid of anything that might happen to me on this Earth, because I know no matter what, nothing can take my spirit from me.

FEARLESS is the story of a man of extremes, whose determination was fueled by faith, family, and the love of a woman. It's about a man who waged a war against his own worst impulses and persevered to reach the top tier of the U.S. military. Always the first to volunteer for the most dangerous assignments, Adam's final act of bravery led to the ultimate sacrifice.
FEARLESS is the intimate story of a devoted man who was an unlikely hero but a true warrior, described by all who knew him as just that--fearless.

This is less a story about the Navy Deal than it is about the man Adam Brown. It starts with him as a boy growing up in Arkansas and unfolds his life. Even though I knew from the beginning that Adam died, I cried. My heart ached for him and his family. He was such an amazing man and, even though this will sound strange, I will miss him. After oil was discovered beneath their land, the Osage rode in chauffeured automobiles, built mansions, and sent their children to study in Europe.
Then, one by one, the Osage began to be killed off. The family of an Osage woman, Mollie Burkhart, became a prime target. One of her relatives was shot. Another was poisoned. And it was just the beginning, as more and more Osage were dying under mysterious circumstances, and many of those who dared to investigate the killings were themselves murdered.
As the death toll rose, the newly created FBI took up the case, and the young director, J. Edgar Hoover, turned to a former Texas Ranger named Tom White to try to unravel the mystery.

This was a hard one to get through as it was written very factually and dry. The writing was very thorough almost to the point of being tedious. I did expect that this book would flow and be more engaging. That being said, this was such a horrific crime that almost got covered up and I think everyone should know what happened.
Elle Is For Livinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10678832226814328887noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3600559449923896597.post-48466897757319974042024-02-25T14:16:00.000-07:002024-02-25T14:16:15.333-07:00My Time With God by Joyce Meyer

My Rating: 4.9

Each daily entry guides readers through a narrative of meditations, an uplifting declaration, and relevant scripture to encourage greater intimacy with God. Including spiritual revelations experienced by Joyce. Each chapter is only a couple of pages so easy to fit in to my morning and I carry the thoughts through out the day. I also love how Joyce includes a scripture at the beginning pertaining to the thought for the day and uses it in ways I would never have gotten out of the scripture. But soccer mom Lara Love Hardin has been hiding a shady she is funding her heroin addiction by stealing her neighbors’ credit cards.
Lara is convicted of thirty-two felonies and becomes inmate S32179. She learns that jail is a class system with a power structure that is somewhere between an adolescent sleepover party and Lord of the Flies . Furniture is made from tampon boxes and Snickers bars are currency. But Lara quickly finds the rules and brings love and healing to her fellow inmates as she climbs the social ladder to become the “shot caller,” showing that jailhouse politics aren’t that different from the PTA meetings she used to attend.

This was real and geniune. Married to her college sweetheart, she owns a chain of upscale hair salons, and Derek runs his own company. They're admired in their community and are a loving family—until their world falls apart the day their son Sebastian is taken.
A year later, Marin is a shadow of herself. The FBI search has gone cold. The publicity has faded. She and her husband rarely speak. She hires a P.I. to pick up where the police left off, but instead of finding Sebastian, she learns that Derek is having an affair with a younger woman. This discovery sparks Marin back to life. Following a trail of police reports, FBI files, cancer statistics, and medical journals, this revealing book presents a web of secret-keeping which swept doctors into cover-ups of contaminated polio vaccines, cancer outbreaks, the arrival of the AIDS virus, and a deadly biological weapon tested on both monkeys and humans. Add Lee Harvey Oswald to the cast of this secret bio-weapon project, and this dark tale connects Oswald’s summer of secrets to the intrigue surrounding the assassination of President Kennedy.

Wow, just wow. Not only did Haslam give tons of detailed background research to support all of this theories but the things he uncovered. This is not as much about the JFK assassination as it is about Dr Mary Sherman and David Ferrie with their laboratory full of mice and viles of viruses. I have no doubt that the cancer and AIDs origins and so many other things he revealed are real. This was long and at times the detail on the felt tedious. I am glad we listened to it on audio. There was so much information covered. We knew of a lot of the nefarious things our Government does but this revealed a whole new level. At the end of it we were talking about this and still refer to it in so many conversations.
Elle Is For Livinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10678832226814328887noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3600559449923896597.post-59027707869649074672023-12-23T20:13:00.000-07:002023-12-23T20:13:54.947-07:00The Connelly's of County Down by Tracey Lange

My Rating: 4.6

When Tara Connelly is released from prison after serving eighteen months on a drug charge, she knows rebuilding her life at thirty years old won’t be easy. Kennedy struggles to contain the growth of Communism while he learns the hardships, solitude, and temptations of what it means to be president of the United States. That being said, it did a good job of capturing the events leading up to Kennedy's assassination.
Elle Is For Livinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10678832226814328887noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3600559449923896597.post-7492377592547370232023-12-10T21:41:00.000-07:002023-12-10T21:41:59.137-07:00Yellowface by R.F. He grows up in a cloistered Hasidic community, a world suffused by ritual and revolving around a charismatic Rebbe. He is torn between two identities, the one consecrated to God, the other devoted only to art and his imagination, and in time, his artistic gift threatens to estrange him from that world and the parents he adores.
As it follows his struggle, My Name Is Asher Lev becomes a luminous, visionary portrait of the artist, by turns heartbreaking and exultant.

This is a quiet book where Asher and his parents struggle with Asher's gift. Asher is a very quiet boy who seems wise beyond his years. This book explores if it is right to pursue a gift when it leads to blasphemy, This deals with the struggle of the art vs the Jewish world, honoring your father and mother and being true to yourself. Potok's writing is quiet and beautiful. Sometimes so quiet that you might miss some of the beauty in the soft tender pacing. I will definitely be immersing myself again in the remaining works by this gifted author.
Elle Is For Livinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10678832226814328887noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3600559449923896597.post-15209302561146657692023-11-27T18:15:00.000-07:002023-11-27T18:15:00.221-07:00Go As A River by Shelley Read

My Rating: 4.7

Set in 1960's Colorado. Victoria Nash is only 17 years old and runs the household on her family’s peach farm in the small ranch town of Iola, Colorado. She is the sole surviving female in a family of troubled men. Wilson Moon is a young drifter with a mysterious past, displaced from his tribal land and determined to live as he chooses.
Victoria encounters Wil by chance on a street corner, a meeting that profoundly alters both of their young lives, unknowingly igniting as much passion as danger. When tragedy strikes, Victoria leaves the only life she has ever known. She flees into the surrounding mountains where she struggles to survive in the wilderness with no clear notion of what her future will bring. As the seasons change, she also charts the changes in herself, finding in the beautiful but harsh landscape the meaning and strength to move forward and rebuild all that she has lost, even as the Gunnison River threatens to submerge her homeland―its ranches, farms, and the beloved peach orchard that has been in her family for generations.

This is beautifully written and captures a lot of emotion on a wide variety of topics: racism, family strife, and the town of Iola being submerged. Adapted from Bill O'Reilly's historical thriller Killing Patton, this book will have young readers—and grown-ups too—hooked on history.
This thoroughly-researched and documented book can be worked into multiple aspects of the common core curriculum.

We enjoyed this despite a lot of the material from O'Reilly's book "Killing Patton" being reused. So much was covered including Russia having a free reign in Berlin. He’s the kind of man who always lends a hand and has a good word for everyone. But Aidan has a dark secret he’s been keeping from everyone in town and those closest to him. He’s a kidnapper and serial killer. Aidan has murdered eight women and there’s a ninth he has earmarked for death: Rachel, imprisoned in a backyard shed, fearing for her life.

This is told primarily from three different women's perspectives: Rachel, Aidan's daughter Cecilia, and Emily a local woman who has a crush on Aidan. There are very mixed reviews on this one but I liked it (not loved it but a solid like). I thought the author did a fabulous job of pulling off the three different viewpoints but also communicating Aidan - with the different personas that he had around different people in the town as well as with the women. WARNING: abuse, sexual abuse and captivity.
Elle Is For Livinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10678832226814328887noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3600559449923896597.post-8892861706864762252023-10-25T18:04:00.000-07:002023-10-25T18:04:44.681-07:00Hamnet by Maggie O'Farrell
My Rating: 4.9

England, 1580: The Black Death creeps across the land, an ever-present threat, infecting the healthy, the sick, the old and the young alike. The end of days is near, but life always goes on.
A young Latin tutor—penniless and bullied by a violent father—falls in love with an extraordinary, eccentric young woman. Agnes is a wild creature who walks her family’s land with a falcon on her glove and is known throughout the countryside for her unusual gifts as a healer, understanding plants and potions better than she does people. Once she settles with her husband on Henley Street in Stratford-upon-Avon, she becomes a fiercely protective mother and a steadfast, centrifugal force in the life of her young husband, whose career on the London stage is just taking off when his beloved young son succumbs to sudden fever.

I thought I loved plot driven books but again, O'Farrell is pulling me in with another character driven book that I couldn't put down. The writing was so vivid that I literally had dreams about this book. It pulled me in and made me want more. The scenes of grief shredded me. The writing was gorgeous and brought the characters, particularly Agnes, to life. It made me feel like I was walking through 1580 England. I loved that they never named Shakespeare but referred to him as Agnes' husband or the children's father. Knowing this piece of Shakespeare's history has me rethinking many of Shakespeare's plays and their inspiration. I loved the Marriage Portrait and I think that O'Farrell hit it out of the park again. I absolutely love her writing style.
Elle Is For Livinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10678832226814328887noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3600559449923896597.post-68765112367158910152023-10-18T13:38:00.000-07:002023-10-18T13:38:55.666-07:00The Weight of Ink by Rachel Kadish

I may be in the minority but I found this long and laborious. It needed a good editor.

Like the prior books, Peter Ash is the main character and he has a mission but, this book has some VERY unlikable characters that detracted from the book. I understand having bad men/unlikable characters but, I felt that Petrie went to extreme with this book and the explicit fantasies were very off-putting. Hopefully future books return to the great story lines and leave a lot of the graphic repulsive traits out of the characters.
Elle Is For Livinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10678832226814328887noreply@blogger.com0
